There is a diverse selection of options for treating ED ranging from invasive to oral medications like Cialis, therapeutic counseling and surgery. Certain devices were once popular for man suffering from ED such as penile pumps. Depending on the severity of your ED determines which treatment will have the most value to you.

There are costs involved with treatments so you may want to discuss your options with your partner. Treatment costs will vary and insurance coverage is spotty at best. Since the problem could be due to a health problem in the first place, insurance will usually pick up the tab for a checkup. Treatments on the other hand may or may not be covered so you will want to enquire at your insurance company to find out. A lot of policies have a set number of shots or Cialis prescribed on a per month basis. Standard medical [Medicare or Government ins.] does not cover treatment for ED.

Popular Oral Medications [PDE5 inhibitors]

There are several more recent medications to treat ED orally such as Cialis. They have contributed to a revolution of ED treatment in afflicted males around the world. Three ED drugs that have taken ED treatment to a new level:

• Cialis [Tadalafil]
• Viagra [sildenafil]
• Levitra [Vardenafil]

Sildenafil was the first option to come on the market. In the last few years, Cialis has won approval from millions of men suffering from erectile dysfunction for a number of reasons.

All three oral ED medications have pretty well the same mechanism of action. Clinically these meds are referred to as phosphodiesterase inhibitors or [PDE5s] and they augment the properties of the muscle calming nitric oxide on the penis. In turn, the blood flow is increased and an erection is attained when sexually aroused.

Cialis and the other ED drugs do not act on their own to create an erect penis. Rather they allow for nature to take its course via sexual stimulation of the mind and body. In the majority of men taking a PDE5 drug they manage to attain an erection whatever the source of their ED was.

Cialis in particular has become the ED med of choice for many males because of its long lasting potency in the system. Cialis was given the moniker “The Weekend Pill” by men in France when they discovered the effectiveness of Cialis was evident for an entire weekend of sexual activity. Cialis can remain active for up to thirty six hours in the user, though this time frame varies by individual. The other ED drugs have an effectual period of only four hours.

Cialis was also recently approved as a daily maintenance medication for treating ED in men who preferred the option of always being “ready” and not having to remember to take their pill. A regular Cialis dose is taken from fifteen minutes to one half hour before a sexual encounter, the low dose is taken daily at the same time if at all possible.

All of these ED drugs share many of the same attributes, but vary on dosage strength; duration of effectiveness and adverse reactions can vary. Medical researchers could not tell you which drug is more suited to a specific individual since no studies have been conducted. Patient tolerance is left up to the prescribing physician who will generally start with a lower dose and make modifications if necessary based on the patient.

Certainly, these oral ED medications such as Cialis have helped millions, there are many males with ED who cannot tolerate the medications or simply should not have them. Men with ED should not take PDE5 inhibitors if:

• They are currently taking a nitrate based medication for angina
• If they are taking an anticoagulant medication or blood thinners.
• If they are taking particular alpha blockers for prostate problems or hypertension.
• If you suffer with severe heart disease or have had heart failure.
• If you have suffered a stroke.
• If you have hypotension or low blood pressure.
• Or, if you have diabetes that is not under control.

Do not be disillusioned if Cialis or one of the other oral meds does not help at first. Your physician may need to alter your prescription of Cialis or one of the other PDE5s to find the correct dosage or change when it is administered.

Prior to taking any ED medicine — including Cialis —be certain you discuss your situation with your general practitioner and ask the following:

• What is good about the ED drug and what the possible adverse reactions are with the ED medication option your M.D. suggests.
• Talk about all of your past and present medical ailments you have endured and how they may affect your use of Cialis or other ED meds.
• Discuss ALL the other medicines you are taking regardless if they are OTC, herbal remedies, health supplements or vitamins as well as prescription drugs. He may not have been the prescribing physician.
• Discuss prostaglandin E [alprostadil]

Other ED Treatments

There are two methods of using the medication alprostadil. This is a man made variation of the prostaglandin E hormone that also aids in calming the musculature tissue about the penis, augmenting blood flow to achieve an erection.

The first method is administering the drug via an injection into the penis, which aids in attaining an erection in about twenty minutes or so and the erection will remain for about an hour. This treatment is effective for quite a few males with ED since it is a direct shot of medicine and targeted. Most men cringe at the thought of a needle anywhere near their groin but be assured that the needle is so fine that any pain is mild. Adverse reactions include some bleeding, long lasting erection and development of gristly penile tissue. It can also be pretty expensive per dose.

Another method is giving yourself an intraurethral suppository, which is tiny, into the end of the penis. Inserted about two inches in, the medicine is absorbed and blood flow is increased giving the user an erection. Even though there is nothing sharp involved in this therapeutic procedure, it can still be sore to excruciating for the person. It can cause some bleeding and vertigo, and again toughen up the tissue.

Hormone therapy could be an option for certain males with ED. If the patient has a lack of testosterone than a testosterone replacement regimen can be initiated. Some men have and do use a penile pump but the device has been considered a turn off for both the user and the partner. Some men who require it, elect for vascular surgery. While surgery has its own inherent risks, the procedure is for those men suffering from blockages that need to be treated so blood can once again flow regularly and smoothly into the penis. Over time, the results of this surgery have been inconclusive.

Penile implants are used on men that have suffered an injury or may have blockages in the blood vessels of the penile region. The device is installed surgically onto the penis and inflated to assist in raising the penis to erection. One can assume that this treatment method comes with its own set of psychological roadblocks but for those who have no choice it is a valuable method of treatment. Finally, for emotional or psychologically challenged ED patients, therapeutic counseling may be suggested by a physician to aid in overcoming mental roadblocks to achieving a satisfying erection. It may be suggested in combination with another form of ED treatment. Overall, The Cialis like oral medications are a medical breakthrough for a condition that has plagued men for centuries.
